Summerlin
|
Summerlin is the result of the vision of the legendary Howard R. Hughes, Jr. who acquired a sprawling 25,000-acre parcel of land in the early 1950s. Five miles across and eight miles in length, it still ranks as one of the largest properties adjacent to a major metropolitan area under single ownership. In 1985, the property passed intact to The Howard Hughes Corporation. In 1988, work began on the new community.
Summerlin's master plan calls for a community of balanced land use. A significant portion of the land is reserved as open space to protect the ecological balance and to preserve the rugged beauty and Southwestern character of the land. Summerlin already has more than 100 parks (with more planned), two 18-hole golf courses, numerous cultural activities and a booming business district.
Each park is designed with facilities to accommodate a certain focus - such as soccer, swimming or tennis. For example, the Hills Park is best known for its amphitheatre. This venue accommodates many outdoor concerts and theatrical productions during the summer months. This park also features a children's play area, tennis courts, a basketball court and picnic areas. The Pueblo Park provides 68-acres of uninterrupted scenery for walkers, joggers and skaters. This park features a desert interpretive garden, several nature areas and two active play areas.
The Summerlin Trail System that runs throughout the development is designed to link villages, neighborhoods and parks and will eventually grow to be 100 miles long. Currently, there are 40 miles of this system completed. The trails will eventually provide a link to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area. The scenic Spring Mountain Range is also nearby offering hiking and biking trails and picnic areas.
Located to the west of Las Vegas, the community is bordered on the north by Cheyenne Avenue, on the south by Russell Road, on the west by Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and Spring Mountains, and on the east by The Lakes development. This community is accessible by the Summerlin Parkway, Nevada's first tri-level freeway interchange.
Summerlin offers residents an outstanding choice of schools with both public and private facilities located within the city's borders. There are public elementary schools located in the Crossing, the Pueblo, the Hills and the Arbors villages. The middle schools are located in the Hills and the Arbors villages. There are two public high schools - one is located in the Arbors and the other is located right outside the city boundaries.
